Your Miele stopped mid-cycle and flashed a code. The code is not a concern; it is helping you by telling you exactly which part to check. F10 and F11 usually mean a tap, a hose, or a clogged drain pump filter, and you can clear them yourself in about 15 minutes. Motor, heater, and control board codes need a Miele technician.
Older Miele washers show a numbered F code. W1 models often show a text message such as “Waterproof system activated” instead. Same fault, same fix.
In San Francisco, a few local quirks cause a lot of these codes. Our Hetch Hetchy water is very soft, so a normal detergent dose foams up fast. Top-floor flats on the hills can see low water pressure. And stacked washers tucked into Victorian closets often have drain hoses that get kinked or pushed too high.
Before you start. Turn the washer off, unplug it, and close the water taps before opening any flap or panel.

Miele Washer Error Codes by Fault Type
Water & Drainage Faults (F10, F11, F138, Waterproof)
F10 appears when the drum did not fill in time. F11 means the washer is not draining. F138, shown as “Waterproof system activated” on W1 models, means water has collected in the base and tripped the float switch.
The fix.
- F10. Open the water tap fully, straighten the inlet hose and rinse the mesh filter where the hose meets the washer. Still showing? The inlet valve needs a technician.
- F11. Unplug the washer, open the bottom front flap, drain the water into a tray and twist out the drain pump filter to clear lint and coins. Keep the drain hose kink-free and under 1 meter high. Still showing? The drain pump needs a technician.
- F138 and Waterproof system activated. Close the tap, unplug the washer and check the hose connections, door seal and detergent drawer for drips or overflowing foam. Still showing? An internal hose is leaking, so call a technician.
Motor & Drive Faults (F50, F53, F56)
F50 means the motor is not turning at the speed the control board asked for. F53 means the tachometer (speed sensor) has stopped sending a signal. F56 means the final spin could not reach 400 rpm, usually because of an unbalanced load.
The fix.
- F50. Unplug the washer, empty the drum and turn it by hand. Remove anything caught between the drum and tub. Turns freely but the code stays? The motor or its control electronics need a technician.
- F53. No home fix. A technician needs to test and replace the tachometer or motor wiring.
- F56. Spread the laundry evenly, remove a few heavy items, or add towels to a single heavy item, then run a Spin program. Still showing with normal loads? The drive belt or motor carbon brushes are likely worn, so call a technician.
Heating & Sensor Faults (F20, F29, F51)
F20 means the water did not reach the set temperature in time, usually a failed heating element or NTC temperature sensor. F29 means the heater relay on the control board has failed. F51 means the pressure sensor that reads the water level is giving a bad reading. Most of these are professional repairs.
The fix.
- F20. Clean the drain filter, avoid overloading the drum, reset the washer and run a hot program. Still showing? The heating element or sensor needs a technician. With soft San Francisco water, limescale is rarely the cause, so a failed part is more likely.
- F29. Call a technician, since the relay sits on the control board. Smell burning or the washer feels very hot? Unplug it right away and do not run it again.
- F51. Clean the drain filter and run a Drain program, since a blockage can throw off the reading. Still showing? The pressure sensor or its hose needs a technician.
Door & Operation Faults (F34, F35, F63, F81, F92)
F34 means the door lock will not lock, so the cycle cannot start. F35 means the door lock will not release after the cycle. F63 means the water path control unit is not directing water properly. F81 means too much foam was detected. F92, often shown with a red cross light, is a mold and hygiene warning from too many low temperature washes.
The fix.
- F34. Check no clothing is caught in the door seal, close the door firmly until it clicks, then reset. Still showing? The door lock needs replacing.
- F35. Wait a few minutes for the lock to cool. Still locked? Unplug the washer, drain the water through the drain pump filter, then pull the emergency release tab behind the bottom front flap. Never open the door with water inside.
- F63. Reset once. Still showing? The water path control unit needs a technician.
- F81. Run a Rinse program with no detergent and cut your dose to the soft water line on the label, or let TwinDos handle it. Soft San Francisco water foams fast. No foam and the code returns? Call a technician.
- F92 and red cross light. Empty the drum and run the hottest program or the machine cleaning program with a washer cleaner. Leave the door and drawer slightly open after each wash, especially in foggy neighborhoods like the Sunset and Richmond.

How to Reset a Miele Washing Machine
A reset clears most one off glitches and takes about 10 minutes.
- Turn the washer off.
- Unplug it or switch off its breaker.
- Wait at least 10 minutes, as Miele recommends.
- Plug it back in and turn it on.
- Open and close the door firmly.
- Run a Drain or Spin program to test.
If the same code comes back, the fault is real. Go to its fix above.
When to Call a Miele Technician
Stop and book a repair if any of these apply.
- You smell burning or the washer feels unusually hot.
- The same code returns after a reset and the basic checks.
- You see a motor, heater or sensor code (F20, F29, F50, F53).
- You see any control board code (F39 to F49, F100 and up).
- Water keeps leaking or “Waterproof system activated” keeps returning.
- Your washer is still under warranty.
Have your model number and exact code ready. In San Francisco, mention your building type and floor too, since stacked closet installs and tight stairwells affect how the technician plans the visit.
