Nobody likes pulling a damp load of laundry out of a dryer that stopped mid-cycle with a cryptic code blinking on the display. But here’s the thing: those codes are your dryer’s way of telling you exactly what’s wrong, and you just need to know how to read them.
This guide covers every GE dryer error code, what it means, and what to do about it, whether you’re in a foggy San Francisco apartment with a tight laundry closet or a Sunset District home with a long vent run.
Which GE Dryer Do You Have Â
The model number decides which list applies to you. On front-load dryers, it is printed on a label on the front of the cabinet behind the door, so open the door and look at the frame. On top-load models, check under the lid, along the top rim, or on the back panel.
You only need the first three letters.

These wash and dry in one drum, so they produce faults a vented dryer cannot. Expect water supply, drain, and pump filter codes on top of drying faults. The PFQ UltraFast Combo uses an 18 error for a pump filter that needs cleaning, plus scrolling Consumer Help Indicator messages that suggest a fix without a service call.
If your model starts with DBSR, DVLR, DLSR, or another older four-letter code, it predates electronic fault reporting. Use the no display section.
Numeric Error Codes (GFD, GTD models with a display)
If your GE dryer model starts with GFD or GTD and has a digital display, you’ll see numeric codes like 001, 002, or 009. These are the most common codes on newer GE dryers.

Do GTD and GFD dryers use the same codes?
Yes. Top-load GTD models with a digital display and front-load GFD models run the same control platform and report the same numeric faults. Gas and electric share the numbers too. The difference on a gas model is what sits behind a heat-related code, since you also have an igniter and gas valve coils to test.
How to read stored codes
Reading error memory requires field service mode, and the entry sequence is model-specific. It is printed on the tech sheet folded inside the machine, usually behind the control panel or under the top panel. Do not use a button sequence from a generic web page, because the wrong one drops the dryer into a component test cycle instead.
F codes on GE dryers
F codes appear on GE CleanSpeak dryers and some newer models with advanced diagnostics. These codes are more detailed than numeric codes and often include specific resistance specs.

What E1, E2 and E3 mean
Be careful with E code lists on the internet, including the ones ranking above this page. They contradict each other.
What E1, E2 and E3 mean
GE documentation and the sites ranking for these codes contradict each other. One has E1 as a thermistor open circuit, another as a door latch failure. E3 shows up as a control board fault on one page and an exhaust overheat on the next. Owners hit the same wall from the other side, with codes like E20 appearing on a new GFD gas dryer and turning up nowhere in the manual.
What survives cross-referencing is the grouping, not the exact numbers.

The pattern matters more than any row. A blocked vent produces codes that read like sensor failures, because trapped heat drives the thermistor out of range. Clear the vent, rerun the cycle, and see whether the code comes back. If it clears, nothing failed.
Codes that are not problems
Not every message on your GE dryer is a disaster. Some are just notifications or gentle reminders:
- “Clean Filter” (Cln) , just a reminder to clean the lint filter before the next cycle. Not an error. Do it.
- “SENSE”: The dryer is actively sensing moisture levels. This is normal operation, not a fault.
- F010, Empty drum detected. The cycle started but the drum is empty. Add clothes and restart.
- F011, Dry load detected. The clothes inside are already dry. Add wet garments and restart.
- “Check Vent”: This is a warning, not a fatal error. It means airflow is restricted, usually lint buildup in the vent. Clean the lint filter, check the flexible transition hose, and inspect the exterior vent cap. In San Francisco, exterior vent caps can get clogged with leaves, fog moisture, and debris.
No display, no code: what to check instead
Knob-controlled GE dryers, including GTX models and the older four-letter series, have no digital readout. They cannot show a code, so no code table will help. Work from the symptom instead.
Will not start at all
Check power first, since a dryer with one dead leg of its 240V supply can act completely dead. Then the door switch, which is the single most common cause. Then the thermal fuse, then the drive motor. A broken belt usually lets the motor hum without the drum turning.
Runs but does not heat
A blown thermal fuse cuts heat permanently while the drum keeps turning, which is the classic version of this. On electric models, next comes the heating element and the high-limit thermostat. On gas models, an igniter or gas valve coil failure is more likely than anything else, and the tumbling will feel completely normal.
Takes two cycles to dry one load
This is almost always airflow, not a fault. A dryer needing two cycles for a normal load is running with roughly half the airflow it was designed for. Clean the filter, pull the machine out, clear the duct and the exterior hood, and check the transition duct is not crushed behind the cabinet.
Starts, then stops partway through
A restricted vent letting heat build until a safety device opens is the usual cause. After that, a loose door catch, a failing door switch, or a bad motor relay.
How to reset a GE dryer
- Press Power to switch the dryer off.
- Unplug it, or switch off the breaker if it is hardwired.
- Wait a full 3 minutes. This lets the control board discharge properly. Thirty seconds is not enough.
- Restore power.
- Run a 5-minute timed dry cycle to confirm the dryer stays running.
If the code comes straight back, the fault is still present and the reset has told you something useful.
A temperature or sensor code that clears after you clean the vent was an airflow symptom, not a failed part. Do not order a thermistor on the strength of a code that a duct brush already fixed.
When to call a technician
Call a technician when the fault sits on the heating circuit, the control board, or the motor. That means 005 and F05, plus any heat code that returns after you have cleared the vent and confirmed the thermistor reads in range.
Handle the rest yourself. The lint filter, the duct, the vent hood, the door catch, a stuck button, and a reset need no tools and carry no risk.
Stop using the dryer immediately, not after one more load, if you smell burning or the exhaust feels hot. A dryer that cannot shed heat is a fire risk. Electric models carry 240V. Gas models add combustion and carbon monoxide.
